Why blur a photo

Blurring a photo is one of the most common image edits across creative, professional, and privacy use cases. A blurred image is used as a low-focus background in presentations, websites, and design layouts where you want texture without distraction. Photographers use blur effects to simulate depth-of-field on photos that were shot without a wide aperture. Social media creators use blur as a visual treatment to make text overlays readable against complex backgrounds. Privacy-sensitive uses include obscuring details in screenshots, documents, or photos before sharing.

How the blur is applied

The tool uses the browser canvas API to apply a Gaussian blur filter directly to the pixel data. This runs entirely on your device — your image is never sent to any server. The blur intensity slider controls the blur radius in pixels: a low value (1–5px) produces a soft diffusion effect, a mid value (10–20px) creates a clearly blurred look, and a high value (30–40px) produces a heavily blurred or frosted-glass appearance. The output PNG preserves the original pixel dimensions.

Blur photo vs blur background

This tool blurs the entire photo uniformly — every pixel in the image is blurred at the same intensity. If you want to keep the subject sharp and blur only the background (simulating camera bokeh), use the Blur Background tool, which uses AI to separate the subject from the background first. If you want to blur a specific face in a photo, use the Blur Face tool.

Common use cases

Background texture — a blurred version of a photo works well as a full-screen background behind UI, text, or video. Privacy — blur entire screenshots or photos before sharing to hide sensitive information. Thumbnail design — a blurred background layer behind a text title card is a common YouTube and blog thumbnail format. Depth-of-field effect — simulate a soft-focus aesthetic on photos that were shot in focus. Presentation slides — blurred photos as slide backgrounds add visual depth without competing with content.

Does blurring reduce image quality?

The output file is a lossless PNG at the original pixel dimensions, so there is no compression loss. The blur effect itself reduces perceived sharpness, which is the intended result. If you need a smaller file size after blurring, use the Compress PNG or Convert PNG to JPEG tool on the result.

Can I undo the blur and get the original back?

Yes — click Try Another to start over with a new upload, or simply drag the slider back to a lower value before downloading. Your original file on your device is never modified.

Will my photo be uploaded to a server?

No. The blur is applied entirely in your browser using the canvas API. Your image data never leaves your device.
