Why blur faces in photos
Sharing photos publicly without consent of the people in them is a growing legal and ethical concern. GDPR in Europe, privacy laws in many countries, and platform policies increasingly require that identifiable individuals be anonymized before publication. Beyond legal requirements, blurring faces is common practice in journalism, documentary photography, social media posts showing children or bystanders, and any context where protecting someone's identity matters more than showing their face.
Common use cases
Social media creators blur faces of people in the background of their photos who did not consent to being featured. Journalists and bloggers anonymize sources, protesters, or victims when reporting sensitive stories. Parents blur other children's faces before posting school or event photos. Businesses blur faces in office or event photos before publishing to company websites or marketing materials. Researchers and academics anonymize subjects in published study imagery.
How the AI detects faces
The model uses a face detection algorithm trained to locate faces regardless of angle, lighting, skin tone, or partial obstruction. It scans the entire image and identifies the bounding region of each face, then applies a gaussian blur within that region. The rest of the image stays sharp. For standard photos taken under normal conditions, detection accuracy is high across a wide range of face sizes and positions in the frame.
Group photos and multiple faces
The tool processes all faces in the image in a single pass. Whether there is one person or a crowd, every detected face gets blurred automatically. You do not need to run the tool separately for each person or manually identify which faces to blur.
What if a face is not detected?
Detection accuracy depends on the clarity and size of faces in the image. Very small faces, heavily obscured faces, or faces at extreme angles may not always be detected. If a face is missed, try uploading a higher resolution version of the image, or crop closer to the subject before uploading.
Does it work on side profiles?
The model performs best on faces that are roughly front-facing. Side profiles and faces turned significantly away from the camera may not always be detected, depending on how much of the face is visible. Front-facing and three-quarter angle faces are detected reliably.
Is the output watermark-free?
Yes. Layercy does not add watermarks to any processed image. The downloaded PNG is clean and ready to publish or use in any context.
