How to Blur an Image Background Online
Use the slider to control how strong the blur is — from a light softening that just de-focuses the background to a heavy bokeh effect that draws all attention to your subject.
Click Blur Background. The AI processes your photo and delivers a sharp subject against a smoothly blurred background. Download the PNG instantly.
What is background blur and why does it matter?
Background blur — also called bokeh or depth-of-field effect — is a technique where the background of a photo is softened while the subject stays sharp. In traditional photography this is achieved with a wide aperture lens. Online, AI replicates the same effect by detecting the subject, separating it from the background, blurring the background layer, and compositing the sharp subject back on top. The result looks like it was shot with a DSLR or mirrorless camera rather than a phone.
Who uses background blur
Portrait photographers use it to fix photos taken on phones or with kit lenses where the background is distracting. Product sellers use it to make product photos look more professional by de-emphasising the shooting environment. Content creators use it for profile pictures, LinkedIn headshots, and social media posts where a clean background makes the subject pop. Video callers use blurred screenshots of their setup when a clean background is needed for a profile image or thumbnail.
How the AI separates subject from background
The model uses semantic segmentation to classify every pixel as foreground or background. It builds a precise mask around the subject — handling hair, curved edges, and complex shapes — then applies the gaussian blur only to the pixels behind the mask. The sharp subject layer is drawn on top, creating a seamless composite where the subject and the blurred background meet cleanly at the edges.
Choosing the right blur intensity
A low blur value (2–6px) gives a subtle softening that reduces background distractions without making the blur obvious. A mid value (8–14px) produces a natural-looking shallow depth-of-field effect similar to a portrait lens at f/1.8. High values (16–30px) create a heavy bokeh that completely eliminates background detail — useful when the background is cluttered and you want the subject to stand out completely.
Best photos for this effect
Photos with a clear, well-lit subject against a reasonably distinct background produce the sharpest results. Portraits with good contrast between the subject and background work extremely well. Product shots on a table or surface also produce clean edges. Images where the subject and background have very similar tones or colours may show some edge imprecision, but the overall blur effect will still look good at normal viewing sizes.
Does this work on group photos?
Yes. The AI detects all foreground subjects — whether there is one person or a group — and keeps everyone sharp while blurring everything behind them.
Can I use this for LinkedIn or professional headshots?
Yes. A light-to-medium blur setting works well for professional headshots. It cleans up a busy background without making the image look obviously edited, giving you a polished result suitable for LinkedIn, company directories, and professional profiles.
Is the output watermark-free?
Yes. Layercy does not add watermarks to any processed image. The downloaded PNG is clean and ready to publish, share, or use in any design.
What is the output format?
The result is saved as a PNG file. PNG preserves clean edges around the subject and supports the compositing used to blend the blurred background with the sharp foreground.
