Why convert photos to black and white

Black and white photography strips away colour distractions and focuses attention on composition, contrast, light, and texture. Colours that compete for attention in a photo often harmonise beautifully in grayscale. Portrait photographers use black and white to add a timeless, editorial quality. Product photographers use it for clean, high-contrast catalogue images. Designers use it for print layouts, editorial graphics, and anywhere a photo needs to work alongside strong typography without clashing.

Grayscale vs black and white

True black and white uses only pure black and pure white with no intermediate tones — common in graphic design and high-contrast printing. Grayscale uses the full range of grey tones between black and white, preserving all the tonal detail of the original photo. This tool produces a grayscale image, which is the correct choice for photographs where preserving shadow and highlight detail matters.

Common uses for black and white photos

Portrait photography — black and white portraits emphasise expression and reduce skin tone distractions. Architecture and interiors — removing colour highlights structural detail and geometry. Social media — black and white posts stand out in colour-saturated feeds. Print and publishing — some print formats or budgets require grayscale images. Design mockups — grayscale images work as neutral placeholders in UI and layout designs.

Will converting reduce quality?

No. The conversion happens in the browser using the canvas API — the original pixel dimensions are preserved and the output PNG is lossless. The only change is the removal of colour information. The output file is typically smaller than the original because grayscale data compresses more efficiently than colour data.

Can I undo the conversion and get colour back?

No. Once colour information is removed it cannot be recovered from the grayscale file. Keep a copy of your original colour image before converting if you may need it later.

Does it work on screenshots?

Yes. Screenshots, UI captures, photos, illustrations, and any other image type all work. The grayscale filter is applied uniformly to all pixel data regardless of the image content.
