How the pencil sketch effect works
The tool uses a technique called colour dodge blending, applied directly to the image pixel data in your browser using the canvas API — no server or AI model required. The process runs in three passes. First, the photo is converted to grayscale. Second, the grayscale image is inverted and blurred — the blur radius controls how thick the sketch lines will be. Third, the original grayscale and the blurred-inverted version are blended using the dodge formula: result = base × 255 ÷ (255 − blurred). This makes areas with no edges appear white and traces boundaries between tones as dark pencil lines, producing a result that closely resembles a hand-drawn sketch.
Pencil vs Colored sketch
Pencil mode uses grayscale as the base layer, producing a classic black and white drawing. Colored mode uses the original photo colours as the base and blends the same dodge layer on top, resulting in a sketch that keeps the colours of the original image while still looking hand-drawn. Colored mode works especially well for portraits and landscapes where colour adds depth to the drawing.
Line thickness guide
Level 1–2 produces fine, delicate lines similar to a sharp pencil or technical drawing pen — good for detailed photos and portraits. Level 3 is the balanced default with clearly visible strokes. Level 4–5 gives bold, heavy lines that look like charcoal or a thick marker sketch — works well for simple subjects and graphic use cases like avatars or prints.
Common uses
Portraits — pencil sketch avatars are popular for profile pictures and social media. Art and illustration — turn reference photos into sketch-style artwork for posters, cards, and prints. Tattoo reference — a sketch version of a photo can serve as a clean line reference for tattoo artists. Gifts — personalized sketch portraits make meaningful printed gifts. Content creation — sketch-style thumbnails and headers have a distinctive hand-crafted look.
