How the cartoon effect works
The tool applies two techniques to the image using the browser canvas API — no AI model or server required. First, edge detection using a Sobel filter finds the boundaries between objects and areas of different colour. These edges are darkened to create the outline look typical of cartoons and comics. Second, colour posterisation reduces the continuous colour range of a photograph to a smaller number of flat colour bands — the same technique used in screen printing and pop art. Combined, these two effects transform a realistic photo into something that looks hand-drawn or animated.
Which cartoon level to use
Level 1–2 gives a subtle artistic effect — edges are softened, colours are slightly simplified, but the photo still looks photographic. Level 3 is the balanced default — clearly cartoon-like but with enough detail to be recognisable. Level 4–5 pushes toward a bold comic book or graphic novel look with strong outlines and very flat colour regions. Higher levels work best on photos with clear subjects and good lighting. For portraits, level 2–3 usually produces the most natural-looking result.
What photos work best
Photos with well-lit subjects and defined edges produce the strongest cartoon effect. Portraits, product photos, animals, architecture, and landscapes all work well. Very dark photos or images with heavy motion blur may produce softer outlines since the edge detection relies on contrast between neighbouring pixels. For best results, use a photo with good lighting and a clear focal subject.
Common uses
Profile pictures — cartoon-style avatars are popular on social media and messaging apps. Custom illustrations — turn a photo into artwork for posters, cards, or gifts. Content creation — cartoon thumbnails and headers stand out in feeds. Privacy — a cartoonised version of a photo shares likeness without sharing a realistic image. Fun — see what you or your pets look like as a cartoon character.
