How the glitch effect works
The tool applies three layered techniques to the pixel data using the browser canvas API. First, RGB channel shifting — the red channel is offset to the left and the blue channel to the right, splitting the colours and creating the characteristic chromatic aberration look of corrupted video. Second, random block displacement — horizontal slices of the image are shifted left or right by random amounts, simulating data corruption in image rows. Third, scanlines — evenly spaced dark horizontal bands mimic the phosphor lines of old CRT monitors. Because the block positions are randomised each time, hitting Randomize generates a unique glitch pattern.
Common uses
Album art and music visuals — glitch aesthetics are popular in electronic, hip-hop, and experimental music. Gaming and esports — glitch effects are a natural fit for game-adjacent branding and thumbnails. Social media content — eye-catching glitch photos stand out in feeds. Poster and flyer design — the distorted look suits event graphics and zine aesthetics. Profile pictures — a glitched avatar has a distinctive digital-art identity.
