How to Apply an Emboss Effect to a Photo
Use the Intensity slider to control relief depth from subtle to deep. Switch between Grayscale (classic look) and Colored (blended with original colours) using the toggle buttons.
Click Download to save the result as a PNG at the original pixel dimensions, with no watermark.
How the emboss convolution works
The tool applies a classic 3×3 emboss kernel to the grayscale luminance of each pixel. The kernel has negative weights in the top-left positions and positive weights in the bottom-right positions: [-2,-1,0 / -1,1,1 / 0,1,2]. For each pixel, the weighted sum of its 3×3 neighbourhood's grayscale values is calculated, then 128 is added to shift the neutral result to mid-gray. This means flat areas of the image — where neighbouring pixels are similar — map to gray, while edges become bright highlights (where luminance increases in the kernel's positive direction) or dark shadows (where luminance increases in the negative direction). The Intensity slider scales the off-diagonal kernel weights, deepening the contrast between highlights and shadows.
When to use the emboss effect
Graphic design and branding — embossed logos and typography give a premium pressed-metal or letterpress feel. Texture overlays — an embossed layer can be blended over a design to add tactile depth. Art prints and posters — the stark contrast between highlight and shadow creates striking monochrome artwork. Background textures — embossed photos make subtle backgrounds that add depth without competing with foreground content. Social media visuals — the unusual 3D look of an embossed photo is eye-catching and distinctive in a feed dominated by standard photography.
