Color Splash Effect

Keep one colour vibrant while everything else fades to black and white. Pick a colour, adjust tolerance, and download. Free, no signup.

How to Apply a Color Splash Effect Online

1Upload your photo

Drag and drop or click to upload a JPG, PNG, or WEBP file. Red is selected by default and the effect is applied immediately.

2Choose a colour and tolerance

Click one of the eight colour preset circles to select which hue to preserve. Adjust the tolerance slider — a wider tolerance keeps more similar shades, a narrower one is more selective.

3Download

Click Download to save the result as a PNG at the original pixel dimensions, with no watermark.

How the color splash effect works

The tool processes every pixel in your image using the browser canvas API. For each pixel, the RGB values are converted to HSL (Hue, Saturation, Lightness) to extract the hue angle — a value from 0° to 360° that represents the pure colour regardless of brightness or saturation. The hue is then compared to the selected target hue. If the difference is within the tolerance window, the pixel keeps its original colour. If it falls outside, the pixel is desaturated to grayscale using the standard luminance formula. This approach means naturally coloured areas of your chosen hue — even in shadows or highlights — are preserved, while everything else becomes black and white.

Common uses

Portrait photography — keep a subject's red dress or blue eyes while the background fades to grey, making the detail pop. Product photography — isolate the colour of a product against a neutral background to draw attention. Wedding and event photos — highlight flower arrangements, decorations, or clothing in colour while the rest of the scene is monochrome. Nature and landscape — preserve the vivid green of a tree or the golden hue of autumn leaves. Social media content — colour splash images are visually arresting and generate high engagement in feeds.
