When to rotate an image

Photos taken with a phone or camera in the wrong orientation often open sideways or upside down in browsers, documents, and design tools. Rotating corrects the orientation so the image displays as intended. Common cases include portrait photos shot in landscape mode, scanned documents that come out rotated, and screenshots that need reorienting before use.

When to flip an image

Flipping horizontally creates a mirror image — useful for correcting selfies where text or logos appear reversed, creating symmetrical design elements, or matching a layout that needs a subject facing a specific direction. Flipping vertically is less common but useful for reflection effects and certain design compositions.

Rotate vs flip — what's the difference

Rotating turns the image clockwise or counter-clockwise — 90° moves a landscape image to portrait and vice versa. Flipping mirrors the image along an axis without changing its orientation. A flipped image is not the same as a rotated one — a person facing left will face right after a horizontal flip, but will face upward after a 90° rotation.

How do I rotate 180 degrees?

Click Rotate Right twice, or Rotate Left twice. Each click rotates the image by 90°, so two clicks give you 180°.

Will rotating reduce image quality?

No. The rotation is performed on the original image data in the browser canvas without any compression. The output PNG is lossless, so there is no quality loss from rotating or flipping.
