When to boost saturation

Photos taken on overcast days, through glass, or with neutral phone cameras often look muted. A saturation boost of +20 to +40 brings colours back to how the scene looked in person. Landscape photos, food photography, and product images all benefit from slightly elevated saturation.

When to reduce saturation

Desaturating an image creates a timeless, editorial look. A slight reduction (-20 to -40) gives portraits a natural, film-like quality. Reducing to -100 creates a full black and white conversion. A partially desaturated image also works well as a background for text overlays where colour would compete with readability.

Common use cases

Boosting product photo colours for e-commerce listings, creating a matte desaturated look for social media, quick black and white conversion, correcting colour-cast images from fluorescent lighting, and enhancing travel and landscape photography.
