What is HEIC and why can't most apps open it

HEIC stands for High Efficiency Image Container. Apple introduced it as the default photo format on iPhones with iOS 11 in 2017. It uses the HEIF (High Efficiency Image Format) standard, which achieves roughly half the file size of JPEG at the same visual quality. For iPhone users, this means more photos fit on the same storage. However, HEIC is an Apple-proprietary format. Windows 10 and 11 require a paid codec from the Microsoft Store to open HEIC files natively. Android does not support HEIC by default. Most social media platforms, online forms, and design tools do not accept HEIC. Converting to JPG makes your iPhone photos universally compatible.

Does the conversion reduce quality

The converter uses a high quality setting so visible quality difference is minimal. Because HEIC is slightly more efficient than JPEG at encoding the same visual detail, the resulting JPG file will be somewhat larger than the original HEIC, but the image will look the same. The conversion runs in your browser using WebAssembly, so no data leaves your device.

HEIC vs HEIF — what is the difference

HEIF is the image format standard. HEIC is Apple's specific implementation of HEIF for still photos. They are effectively the same thing for practical purposes — this tool converts both .heic and .heif files to JPG.

How to get HEIC files off an iPhone

Connect your iPhone to a Mac or PC via USB and transfer photos using Finder or Windows Explorer. Alternatively, share photos to iCloud Drive or email them to yourself — iCloud sometimes converts automatically when sharing to non-Apple devices, but not always. You can also change your iPhone to shoot in JPEG from Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible, but this affects future photos only. This converter handles existing HEIC files without changing your iPhone settings.

Where HEIC files come from

iPhones (iOS 11 and later), iPads, and Macs running macOS High Sierra or later all capture photos in HEIC by default. If someone AirDrops you a photo, downloads from iCloud, or attaches a photo from an iPhone to an email on macOS, it may arrive as a .heic file.

Can I open a HEIC file on Windows without converting?

Yes, but only after installing the HEIF Image Extensions codec from the Microsoft Store, which costs a small fee. Converting to JPG with this tool is free and works immediately with no installation required.

Does it work on Android?

Yes. This is a web tool that works in any browser on any device — Android, Windows, Mac, or Linux. Upload the HEIC file and download the JPG.
